On Everythings For Sale the walls which bracket Boogie’s life are mauled down by the natural course of life, change and by Boogie’s own frustration at his life’s monotony. We hear this exhuastation on the album’s opener, Tired/Reflection “I’m tired of working at myself, I wanna be perfect already, I’m tired of the dating process, I wanna know what’s certain already”.
The juxtaposition between life and death run painfully adjacent on this album. There’s a schism between the hopeful Boogie and the pessimistic Boogie ‘Got this voice in my head won’t be quiet” he tiredly croons on Silent Ride. At times he’s optimistic that he’ll be mended together, but by Live 95, a melancholic track, there seems to be little chance of Boogie’s hope being restored.
Boogie is frustrated with his life, both in terms of his personal life and his career. “How I’m ‘posed to life the stump when I don’t feel my growth nearin”. The frustration which triumphs all is the relationship he has with his girl. The constant clashing is heard on songs like Whose Fault, Swap Meet and Lolsmh. They’re too different. If a river intersected their opinions, they would stand firm on opposite sides of the bank. Whether it’s her not believing in his dreams or her constant cheating allegations against him heard on Whose Fault, they’re incompatible but, somehow, still remain together.
The album rarely drifts from a solemn and pensive undertone and when it does, it fails. He teams up with Eminem on Rainy Days, an unnecessary track which falls flat. The tracks failure is compounded by Eminem’s weird and poor verse “Like a shepherd having a sex with his sheep, fuck what you heard”. Boogie sounds lost and overwhelmed against the track’s trap-like production. But in the subsequent track Skydive, he partners with 6lack and resorts back to his roots with a mid-tempo track. The Compton-native seems to have firmly found his voice on his first album; naked honesty coupled with vivid storytelling. He avoids the tropes of his fellow rap counterparts and creates an album which is authentic to him.
